ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and the IPSO Alliance are proud to announce the successful completion of the first Internet of Things (IoT) Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) PlugtestsTM interoperability event.
This event, organized in co-operation the Probe-IT project, was held in Paris, France on 24-25 March 2012 and was co-located with IETF 83.
CoAP is a lightweight application-protocol for wireless sensors that have limited computing power, memory and radio transmission range. The CoAP protocol, developed by the IETF, provides an efficient way to transfer sensor data such as humidity, temperature, location etc. which can then be translated easily into HTTP. This will allow the integration of sensor data into web-based services and from this, the creation of a true Internet of Things. The CoAP protocol has been selected by ETSI to be part of the ETSI M2M architecture.
This Plugtests event tested features including the base CoAP specification, CoAP Block Transfer, CoAP Observation and the the CoRE Link Format. The test cases were jointly developed by IRISA/Université de Rennes 1 (France), BUPT (China) and ETSI.
This important event allowed vendors to evaluate the interoperability of their products and to verify their understanding of the specifications. It also provided useful feedback to enhance ongoing ETSI and IETF standardization. This event was attended by 18 companies testing the world’s first CoAP client and server implementations from China, EU, Japan and Korea.
ETSI, IPSO Alliance and their partners are committed to drive testing support for IoT industrial deployments in domains such as ETSI M2M, IETF CoRE and 6LoWPAN, to achieve interoperable products.
